Jio Phone unveiled with 4G VoLTE at Rs. 0
Mukesh Ambani took the stage on Friday to unveil the long rumored JioPhone. The JioPhone is a way for Reliance to tap into the 50 crore users who are still not on Jio due to the inability to buy a 4G smartphone. The feature phone comes with 4G VoLTE support and it will be able to run apps like JioCinema, JioTV, and JioMusic. This device will effectively cost you Rs. 0, however, the users will have to make a deposit of Rs. 1500 which will be completely refunded after 3 years.
The phone will be available from August 15 - for testing, and for pre-booking starting August 24 through the MyJio app and Jio offline stores. Users will be able to buy the phones in September on a first-come first serve basis and there might be other offers during the market release.
The JIO phone will come with some advanced features like support for UPI payments, debit and credit card payments, similar to Samsung Pay. The company confirmed that the phone will have a 2.4-inch display, panic button, expandable storage, and FM radio, among other features. Key JioPhone specifications leaked before the launch included dual SIM functionality, 2-megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera, FM radio, and Bluetooth connectivity. There'll be 4GB of internal storage, and 512MB of RAM which are pretty powerful specs for a feature phone. Reliance hopes to increase its 4G coverage even further with the JioPhone and this is what Mukesh Ambani, Chairman-Managing Director Reliance, had to say about it:
The company also hinted that they might release an entry level 4G VoLTE smartphone priced somewhere in the neighborhood of Rs. 3000-4000 which will help them really expand their coverage
