You know what irks me? People blindly believing that MediaTek SoC’s suck. Well, that’s not entirely true. And, the best proof for this is the new Helio P60 SoC.
This eight core MediaTek processor uses 4 Cortex Arm A73 cores plus 4 Cortex Arm A53 cores in a big.LITTLE architecture. In comparison the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, which has 8 Kryo 260 cores. Here’s another interesting observation, the P60 has the same architecture as Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 960 SoC. We know how powerful that processor actually was.
Mr. Phone recently got a unit of the OPPO F7, which has a Helio P60 inside. The F7 is the first phone with this SoC in India and I was keen on benchmarking it. As is usual with most reviews, I ran AnTuTu 7 on the P60 it returned a score of 1,22,250 and that took me entirely by surprise. Why? Well, because when I tested the new SD 636 inside the Redmi Note 5 Pro, it managed to achieve an AnTuTu score of 1,126,39.

This got me curious and I installed other benchmarking apps as well. In 3DMark’s T-Rex test, the F7 scored 33fps. This is slightly lower than the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s score of 35fps. I also ran the powerful and fairly accurate PCMark for Android’s Work 2.0 performance test. This test stresses the device to check browser speeds, video editing, writing, photo editing, and data manipulation. The Redmi Note 5 Pro returned a score of 5716 in my test. On the other hand, the F7 achieved a score of 7421, which is quite a difference.
P.S. Throughout the article, the benchmarks on the left are that of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and the right are that of the OPPO F7.
I know very well that these are synthetic benchmarks, and not necessarily reflective of real life performance. And therefore, I ran a rudimentary speed test to check out if apps open and load faster on the OPPO F7, on the same Wi-Fi network. And lo and behold, the F7 actually turned out to be faster than the Redmi Note 5 Pro, in most cases. I also noticed the the OPPO F7 is a pretty fast and responsive phone in my limited time with it. But before you storm the comments, know that this was a preliminary test just to confirm if the F7 is actually faster. In fact, let me know in the comments section if you actually want a full speed test of the two devices. We shall make one on our YouTube channel.
More powerful, but is it a better buy?
Now, what you need to know is that the Redmi Note 5 Pro is much cheaper than the OPPO F7. You can snag the variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage for as low as Rs 13,999. On the other hand, the OPPO F7 with similar RAM and storage specs, will actually set you back by Rs 21,999. That is a jump of Rs 8,000 and you can actually buy a Redmi 5 for that price difference.
But let’s not forget that buying a Redmi Note 5 Pro is not easy. All thanks to flash sales. And if you do choose the OPPO F7 over the Redmi Note 5 Pro — which, by the way, you can find easily at a nearby store — you are assured of a faster performance. All other parameters notwithstanding, if speed is your concern the F7 is not going to disappoint you. Even gaming ain’t too bad on the phone. I tested the new Shadowgun Legends game and noticed that the phone handled the game with ease. The gaming performance of the new Mali-G72 MP3 has improved by leaps and bounds. In fact, it is neck-to-neck with the Adreno 509.
At the moment, it is too soon to tell definitively that the OPPO F7 is better than the Redmi Note 5 Pro because I am still testing the latter.

One final thing
However, one thing is still bugging me. I don’t understand why OPPO decided not to showcase the prowess of the Helio P60 inside the F7 like Xiaomi did at their launch event of the Redmi Note 5 Pro. In fact, more than the AI selfies of the phone I think OPPO should’ve highlighted the fact that the P60 is so powerful.
Actually, if MediaTek is positioning the Helio P60 as a mid-range SoC, its closest competitors are the Snapdragon 636 and Snapdragon 660. And, you know what, it beats both the processors in AnTuTu synthetic benchmark scores!
