Xiaomi is reportedly working on their new mid-range smartphone - Redmi Note 5, successor to the popular Redmi Note 4. Lately, the rumor mill has been churning quite a bit of information about the upcoming device, with the highlighting features being 18:9 display and dual cameras.
A while ago, two unknown Xiaomi smartphones with 18:9 display turned up on Chinese certification authority TENAA's website, with most of the features inline with what various sources have been telling about the Redmi Note 5. But the main caveat here is, both devices sport only a single camera on the rear and the screen size mentioned on the website is 5.9-inches which doesn't align quite well with the 5.5-inch screen size and dual rear camera setup, as pointed out by previous leaks.
You can read more about the previous leaks here. Recently, Geekbech scores of Redmi Note 5 surfaced online. Read more about that here.
These devices are most likely different variants of the same smartphone as they carry model numbers - MEE7 & MET7, and both of them feature same specifications apart from RAM and Internal Storage.
The images appeared on the website reveals a metallic back panel which looks similar to that of the Redmi Note 4 with horizontally running antenna lines at the top and the bottom, circular camera module followed by an LED flash, a fingerprint scanner and the MI logo (at the bottom end). Taking a closer look, we can also spot a slight camera bump. The power button and volume rockers are located on the right side and the SIM tray is on the left.
Moving to the front portion, earpiece, and sensors along with an 18:9 display can be spotted. MEE7/MET7 doesn't come with capacitive buttons, Xiaomi is more likely to choose on-screen buttons to make the bezels smaller. While the smartphones do not have a truly edge-to-edge display, bezels are thinner than the existing Redmi handsets nonetheless.
According to the TENAA listing, the MEE7 and MET7 features a 5.9 inch LCD display with 2160x1080 resolution, 4000mAh battery and an unspecified octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz. While the MEE7 comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory, MET7 has 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory. The listing also mentions a 12MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera.
Going by the previous leaks, some of them claimed that the Redmi Note 5 will feature a MediaTek Helio P25 SoC while some others pointed towards two variants with Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 660 respectively. Either way, Xiaomi cannot introduce a device running MediaTek SoC in India due to some legal issues, so they have to come up with a Snapdragon variant eventually.
MEE7/MET7 run MIUI 9 on top of Android 7.1.2 Nougat. Both of them measures 58.5 x 75.45 x 8.05mm and weighs in at 179.5 grams. The handsets are expected to come in the following color variants: Black, Gold, Rose Gold, White, Blue, Red, Pink, Gray, and Silver.
Hands-on images of a Redmi Note device which appeared on Weibo, two weeks back had much thinner bezels and dual rear cameras. So, there are chances for a 'Plus' or 'Pro' variant of the Redmi Note 5 which might come with thinner bezels and dual cameras. Or, the image leaked then would be an entirely different device - probably next generation Redmi Pro. That being said, there are also slim chances for MEE7/MET7, not being the Redmi Note 5.
Redmi Note 5 is expected to be announced in November. Stay tuned to The Mr.Phone for more info.
