Apple Music crosses 30 million paid subscribers, but it still can’t catch up to Spotify


Apple Music has now crossed 30 million subscribers. The company has registered over 3 million subscribers after it announced logging 27 million paid Apple Music subscribers during WWDC in June this year. But it’s still away from 60 million paying users on Spotify.

Both Apple and Spotify have paid plans starting from of per month but Apple doesn’t have a free subscription plan. What Apple Music otherwise offers is a three-month free trial period for users to preview the streaming service before they start paying for it. Users can opt out of the free trial anytime during the three-month period.


The more colorful quotes come from Apple Music executive “Jimmy Iovine” who has never been one to mince words.

“I don’t believe that what exists right now is enough,” Iovine said in reference to current streaming services. “I believe we’re in the right place, we have the right people and the right attitude to not settle for what exists right now. Just because we’re adding millions of subscribers and the old catalog numbers are going up, that’s not the trick. That’s just not going to hold.”


As for the biggest challenges facing the music industry, Iovine notes that it’s tough to compete with the wide array of free music options from the likes of YouTube, Pandora, and even Spotify’s free tier.

With iOS 11 out now, you can find a bunch of new features in Apple Music. The app now lets users create a personalized Apple Music profile, and share what they stream with friends and other users on the platform. Since the app is available on both Android and iOS, the company recently made all the features from iOS app available onto Android app. Similar to Siri-integration, Android users can now use voice commands via OK Google to stream songs on Apple Music.
