It’s time when we all take the appropriate measures to stay protected from the Coronavirus outbreak. Due to social distancing, the world wide web has become our source for entertainment and learning. Talking about entertainment, OTT platforms are currently witnessing a surge of users every day. But now the Cellular Operators Association of India has requested the OTT platforms to limit streaming to SD.
OTT – Over-the-Top Players expect to stream in SD quality
This move will ensure that users are able to enjoy effortless streaming while staying indoors. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is requesting the government to issue advisories to players like Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and everyone else concerned with this issue.
The letter furnished by COAI states that since everyone is following the practice of staying indoors, it is obvious that internet penetration will witness a steep rise. The letter suggests that “This sudden surge in digital use is already putting pressure on the network infrastructure of the telecom service providers (TSPs). The TSPs are taking requisite steps to manage this load and facilitate the smooth functioning of the networks during this critical time.”
The authorities are predicting a substantial demand for online video streaming in the coming days. The authorities feel that it is “absolutely essential for the streaming platforms to cooperate with TSPs so as to manage the traffic distribution patterns.”
The COAI has also said that “It is pertinent to note that the need of the hour is that companies offering streaming platform service and TSPs take joint responsibility to take steps to ensure smooth functioning of the data communication networks to align with other measures being taken in this battle to curb the propagation of the virus.”
