HMD Global has announced today that it has become the official sponsor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). KKR is one of the top teams of the Indian Premier league co-owned by Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan. HMD Global along with KKR also unveiled new jerseys of the team with the Nokia branding on it. IPL 2018 is set to kick off on April 7 and KKR’s first match is on April 8 against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Further, the sponsorship contract runs for two years and starts with the current season.
Incidentally, Nokia was previously a sponsor of KKR since 2008 when IPL started and stayed so till 2014. Exact financial details of the deal haven’t been made public as of yet.
The announcement comes just a day before Nokia is set to launch new handsets on April 4 in India. The company has already sent invites to the event and it is believed the company will launch the Nokia 7 Plus tomorrow. The brand launched five smartphones at MWC 2018 and we expect all the handsets to be launched in India in the near future.
Shahrukh Khan, Co-owner of KKR said, “Nokia as a brand has always been close to my heart. We are excited to partner with HMD Global as they script the next chapter of Nokia phones. Nokia is amongst the most loved brands in India. Through our association, we look to unite fans of Nokia and KKR with the common passion for cricket. I look forward to more excitement in the days ahead.”
