Huawei Mate X2 is official in China now and it crosses Rs 2 lakhs INR (CNY 17,999 translated). It is the first commercially available phone to cross the price point and simultaneously being a folding display phone as well. Huawei has announced the Mate X2, the successor, at an event held in China. For the first time, Huawei is introducing a screen that folds inwards, instead of outwards, seen earlier in the predecessors, Huawei Mate X, and the Huawei Mate Xs. There’s another screen on the top, which can be used when the phone’s folded, likewise to the Samsung’s Galaxy Fold/Fold 2 smartphones, it’s just that it’s the first approach from Huawei, this time.
Huawei Mate X2 — Design and Display
Let us talk about displays here, as they are the most prominent ones on any folding phone. The Huawei X2 features a bigger 6.45-inches OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate for the screen on the outside, again, the one which will be used when the phone’s folded. Huawei calls it — the exterior screen, let us stick with that too. The exterior screen has a punch hole cut out that beholds a selfie camera. It comes with 2700 x 1160 pixels and with a pixel density of 456ppi.
The interior screen, on the other hand, which unfolds in-wards; gives a more prominent display measuring 8-inches. It is an OLED display, which also comes with 90Hz refresh rates and 2480 x 2200 pixels, and 413ppi. Both these displays can produce 16.7 million colours, and they slightly differ in touch sampling rates too. While both have 90Hz displays, the interior screen has a touch sampling rate of 180Hz, and the exterior screen has a 240Hz touch sampling rate.
The two screens here are joined by a hinge, which seems to be a multidimensional hinge, that claims to give users a better unfolding experience than before. The part, which encloses the exterior screen now has a wedge design, which not only makes it thinner but is also helpful to have almost negligible gaps when the phone is folded. Huawei further claims that it could give a firm grip as well. The same wedge panel has a bottom-firing speaker, while the other houses rear cameras on the back, and a USB Type-C port at the bottom.
Huawei this time has brought in multiple colour variants on the Mate X2. This includes — the regular Black/White and also newer Crystal Blue and Crystal Pink.
Huawei Mate X2 — Tech Specs
The Mate X2 relies on the Kirin 9000 SoC, under the hood. It’s the first inhouse developed 5nm SoC from Huawei, which is also a 5G capable chipset; the octa-core processor includes 1 Cortex A77 at 3.13GHz coupled with 3 Cortex A77s at 2.54GHz and 4 Cortex A55s at 2.05GHz. The SoC further relies on a 24-core Mali-G78 GPU, for graphics.
In terms of storage, the device equips 8GB of RAM: followed by either 256GB or 512GB of onboard storage. For now, it appears the Mate X2 ships with EMUI 11 (Android 10-based). Huawei during the launch has confirmed that its first HarmonyOS will debut in April, this year, and the Mate X2 will be the first device to get it, and other previous flagships, will follow.
Huawei Mate X2 relies on a decent 4500mAh battery capacity powering both OLED screens. It charges through USB Type-C; and supports the company’s 55W fast charging technology.
Apart from 5G connectivity, the other options on the Mate X2 include Wi-Fi 6+, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, and NFC.
Huawei Mate X2 — Cameras
There are four Leica-powered rear cameras, which are utilisable irrespective of the device being folded/unfolded. There’s a 50MP f/1.9 camera acting as the primary sensor; coupled with a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera, an 8MP f/4.4 super zoom camera. The rear cameras support 1x,3x,10x of optical zoom and up to 100x of digital zoom as well. On the front, the punch hole cut out has a 16MP selfie shooter. However, users can still use rear cameras as selfie shooters making the exterior screen as a viewfinder.
The other highlights of the device include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, stereo sound speakers, and multi-window support (this includes the ability to open the same app in two windows).
Huawei Mate X2 — Pricing
As aforementioned, the Huawei Mate X2 pricing is skyrocketing; it starts at CNY 17999 (Rs 2,01,700 approx.) for the 8GB+256GB variant. The larger 8GB+512GB tails at CNY 18,999 (Rs 2,12,900 approx.). The Mate X2 is currently available in the Chinese markets: the global launch and Indian launch of the folding phone is still unclear at this point.
