The All-new All-in iMac Pro… is it worth it ?

iMac Pro

The reason, the title says All-in is because it’s really expensive. If you’re an average blogger, doing a 9 to 9 job like me, then you probably have to go all in to get the new iMac Pro. But then this machine packs a serious punch. I totally agree that you would get a much affordable assembled PC that can match the power that this thing packs, but then there must be a reason for this machine to exist. Let’s find out more, shall we?

iMac Pro

In the WWDC Apple event, Apple promised us with a new line of desktop Mac’s and the Pro users were very impressed with the lineup. And as they were ending the keynote, they gave us a huge surprise as they unveiled the iMac Pro with a professional grade computing power and an upgrade to the aging Mac Pro. The iMac Pro was set to launch in December and now this is in hands of many anxious professionals who solely rely on photo editing, video editing, and more power activities for their day to day living.

Specifications of the iMac Pro:

Installed Memory (RAM) 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB
Drive Capacity  1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB
Number of Cores 8 Core, 10 Core and 18 Cores
Graphics Processor (GPU) Radeon Pro Vega GPU
Display 27 inch 5K Retina display
Color  Space Grey
Ports 10 GB Ethernet port, SDXC Card slot, 4 USB 3 ports, 4 USB-C Thunderbolt ports

So yes, the Thunderbolt ports can be used for DisplayPort 1.2, Thunderbolt (up to 40 Gbps), USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps), Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI, and VGA supported using adapters (sold separately). So yes, they did keep in mind the need for various ports as a professional would need all kinds of accessories for transferring data and also adding peripherals like a 5K monitor or adding an external GPU. The RAM availability of 128 GB is totally mind-blowing. The processors are 2.3 GHz Intel Xeon core processors are usually used in Servers, stationed in data centers.

Performance of the iMac Pro:

Well, whenever a new iteration of iMac Pro has been released, we would expect at least 20 to 30% of performance boosts. This has been the norm for a couple of years. But now the iMac Pro can give you a performance boost of 200 to 300% as compared to its predecessors. Be it an 8K RED footage or an H.264 4K drone footage, 6K 3D VR Content or even a 50 Megapixel RAW still. Everything is lightning fast.

Even for a programmer, if you are programming on this machine, for a 20K to 30K lines of code, spread out to around 120 source files, the compile time saw a reduction of around 60%. That is in comparison to the 2016 MacBook Pro and the 2013 iMac. And if you are still able to fathom the tides of performance speeds, you have the option to pair it with an external GPU that adds to the already existing power. The 10 core iMac pro already crushes the 12 core 2013 Mac pro in FCP renders. The 18 core would be something that can’t be imagined.

Design of the iMac Pro:

The color combination just matches the iMac Pro for being the beast it is and standing out tall than the other lineup of iMac’s launched in 2017. The Matte black iMac with a beautiful 5K retina display is stunning to look at. It comes with the magic mouse, trackpad and the keyboard which are all painted matte black. The design is not different than its predecessors but the color just makes it more appealing.

The ports are lined up in the back which gives you plenty of IO options, hidden from the front look that shows a clean display slate that gives you godly resolution.

Drawbacks of the iMac Pro :

Most might not agree with me on this. But the only drawback, I feel is the iMac Pro-2017 is completely sealed and doesn’t give any room for upgrade. At a starting price tag of $5000, you don’t get an upgradable design. Though the specifications do stand out to make this machine immensely powerful today. Very small list of machines can actually match this up in the price range, but then is it future proof? That is the question at hand.

There is a likely possibility that we might see a new form of RAM module which is twice as fast than the current generation DDR4 RAM, but we won’t be able to incorporate them in the iMac pro as it’s not upgradable at all. The best thing about the 2013 Mac Pro was that it was upgradable and that helped it sustain till 2017. But then again, Apple’s optimization with High Sierra and the level of compatibility with its proprietary software like the Final Cut Pro, does make this a very reliable machine for years to come. It is a huge investment and there are plenty who would try playing catch up.

The iMac Pro has been a giant leap in Apple’s desktop strategy which was much anticipated and awaited by the pro users. This brings back Apple in the game for desktop computers. Better Late than never 🙂
