The recently released Infinix Zero 5 is Infinix best smartphone to date but how does their latest and greatest stack up against it’s most important, similarly priced rivals, namely the Xiaomi Mi A1 and the Moto X4?
Design and build
Design wise all three devices stand against each other with no manufacturer giving any other any advantage. They all feature slim and sleek metallic builds that set them apart from lower-priced smartphones while also holding up against higher priced smartphones. All three phones still have a quite pronounced bottom and top bezels but also slim side bezels which are expected from smartphones of this price even in the bezel-less era.
The Moto design language continues through to the X4 with the circular, protruding camera module round the back. Both the Mi A1 and Zero 5 have similarly placed camera modules, on the top left of the back of the devices. The Mi A1 module protrudes from the back while the Zero 5’s sit almost flush to the chassis. The Mi A1 and Zero 5 also share fingerprint sensor located on the back of the device while the Moto X4’s sits up front in the place of the Zero 5 and Mi A1’s capacitive keys.
All three devices lack the 18:9 aspect ratio that has become the new norm in the smartphone world but still have great screens. The Zero 5, the larger of all three features a 5.98 inch 1080*1920 pixels screen with 368 PPI covered in gorilla glass 3, the lowest of all three devices due to its larger screen size. The Mi A1 and Moto X4 also feature 1080*1920 pixels displays but of different sizes and pixel densities. The Mi A1 features a 5.5-inch display of 1080*1920 pixels with 403 PPI and corning gorilla glass 3. The Moto X4 has the smallest screen of all the devices at 5.2 inches wi1080*1920 pixels display with 424 PPI and an unspecified version of gorilla glass. Overall the Zero 5 manages to stand its ground well when it comes to the display.
The most noticeable difference between the Zero 5 and the Mi A1 and Moto X4 are chipsets. The Moto X4 and Mi A1 both feature Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, the Snapdragon 625 in the Mi A1 being an octa-core chip clocked at 2.0 GHz with an Adreno 506 GPU. The Moto X4 steps it up a notch with a Snapdragon 630 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz with an Adreno 508 GPU. The Infinix Zero 5, on the other hand, is shipped with a Mediatek Helio P25 octa-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with a Mali-T880 MP2 GPU. These are all solid specifications for devices at this price point.
The Infinix Zero 5 boasts of 6 GB RAM and 64 GB storage on its base model with a Pro model featuring the same specs but with 128 GB of storage. The Mi A1, on the other hand, comes with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB storage. The Moto X4 also comes in two variants, one with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage and the other coming with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage capacity. All phones have expandable storage via a microSD card slot.
The Mi A1 and Moto X4 are part of the Android One program’s resurrection. They both feature a fluid stock android experience with the promise of regular updates and the chance to be the first to obtain the latest Android versions. The Infinix Zero 5 features Infinix home brewed XOS 3.0 which is a customisable user interface. This does not make it clunky and unreliable, but as far as reliability goes, stock android is always the safest bet. Infinix has, however, promised an Android O update as have Motorola and Xiaomi.
On paper the winner is clear as day, the Infinix Zero 5 features a massive 4350 mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging. The Mi A1 then comes in with its 3080 mAh cell with fast charging, the Moto X4 closely following with a 3000 mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging. All in all solid battery life can be expected from all devices.
One of the most important factors when buying a new smartphone is the camera and all three devices feature great camera’s for the price paid. They all feature dual camera setups capable of taking excellent images. They also feature the highly popular depth effect and 2x optical zoom features. The Mi A1 has dual 12 MP back cameras with f/2.2 and f/2.6 apertures capable of 4K video. The Moto X4 features dual 12 and 8 MP cameras, with f/2.0 and f/2.2 apertures respectively also capable of 4K video. Finally, the Infinix Zero 5 features a 12 and 13 MP dual set up with 2x optical and 10x digital zoom capabilities.
Both the Moto X4 and Zero 5 feature 16 MP selfie shooters, while the Mi A1 has a respectable 5 MP selfie shooter.
The Mi A1 is priced competitively at Rs.14,999 with the Infinix Zero 5 coming in with Rs.17,999 price tag. The Most expensive of the bunch is the Moto X4 at Rs.20,999 for the base model and Rs.22,999 for the higher model.
Infinix has managed to provide a solid mid-range smartphone but will find it difficult to compete with the popular Moto X4 and Mi A1. The device has great specifications but in the highly competitive smartphone market, battling against similarly specced smartphones from more well-known brands will always be difficult but as awareness grows we can only expect even better from Infinix.
