According to a report from Canalys, iPhone X is the best selling smartphone in Q4 2017 (American fiscal year). With twenty-nine million units shipped, the Apple product became the talk of the town due to its bezel-less design. The phone was announced alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in September. However, its sale began in November and within these months, the phone has managed to secure these shipments.
Canalys has reported this fact and they believe that the increased demand for the iPhone X is due to the operator-centric markets. For instance, the USA has a larger install base for Apple compared to the other smartphone manufacturers. The phone costs $999 and the option to finance it over a period of many months is another advantage for consumers. Out of twenty-nine million units, seven million have been shipped to China.
Ben Stanton, Analyst at Canalys says, “The iPhone X performance is impressive for a device priced at $999, but it is slightly below industry expectations.”
It was predicted that the phone will be produced in limited quantities. People had to wait for six weeks to get the phone delivered to their doorstep. However, Apple came to par with the demand and in the latter part of November (and December), the iPhone X saw an unprecedented growth in shipment. The company might reduce the production of the phone this year. Don’t believe us? Read this report.
Canalys also notes that the exchange program offered by Apple attracted the users as they were able to exchange their old iPhone with the iPhone X. While the shipment numbers are massive, they are not the best ever for Apple. The company quoted too hefty a price for the phone and some of their strategies backfired as well.
The older iPhones, including the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone SE, and iPhone 8, saw a satisfactory number of shipments. It is clear that people have not forgotten about the older models and that they somewhat believe in them still.
Apple will release the quarter earnings between October 1, 2017, and January 1, 2018, on February 1. It is expected to have gathered the maximum profit. The average sale prices of the iPhones are also expected to improve since Apple has seen a decent response for the iPhone X and older models.
Canalys Analyst Tuan Anh Nguyen says, “Apple is looking at its best performance to date, all thanks to the massive changes it made to its portfolio in Q3.”
