HiSilicon Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G SoC launched, comparison with Kirin 980

Despite facing issues in the market overall due to the recent trade ban, Huawei is still working towards making some of the best flagships out there. The Mate 30 series is one of the most anticipated ones in recent times, and we finally know what kind of hardware it will be running. Today at IFA 2019, Huawei launched the Kirin 990 and the Kirin 990 5G SoCs. Let’s see what they are built of, and how they compare to the last gen’s flagship Kirin 980 SoC.

Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 990 and 990 5G SoC features

Both the Kirin 990 and the Kirin 990 5G SoCs are built on the TSMC’s latest 7nm plus EUV manufacturing, which helps enable a smaller die size offering 36% board reduction, increased transistor density by 18% and 10% improvement in energy efficiency. They come with 16-Core Mali-G76 GPU, compared to 10-Core in the Kirin 980 SoC offering 6% improvement in graphics processing performance. The Kirin 990 5G, as the name suggests, has built-in 5G modem supporting Sub-6 GHz 5G networks on both SA and NSA architectures.

The SoCs have 2 (Big Core) performance + 1 (Smaller Core) ultra lower consumption Da Vinci-based NPU. In terms of camera optics, the Kirin 990 5G adopts new ISP 5.0. As a result, the throughput rate is increased by 15%, the energy efficiency is increased by 15%, the video processing capability is improved. There is also a new BM3D dual-domain video noise reduction technology in which video noise reduction capability is improved by 20%.
