Nokia 8

HMD Global has launched its current flagship – Nokia 8 in India, today as scheduled. The phone was announced back in August and is currently on sale in Europe for £500 (Rs. 44,000). In India, Nokia 8 is priced at Rs.36,999 which is considerably lower than the European pricing.

Features and Specifications

Nokia 8 features a 5.3-inch QHD (2560×1440) IPS LCD display covered with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5. The outer shell of Nokia 8 is machined from a single block of 6000 series Aluminum with a polished mirror finish at the back. It is IP54 certified which makes it resistant to splashes. The fingerprint scanner is placed below the display along with two capacitive buttons for navigation.

Under the hood, Nokia 8 comes with an octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 internal memory with expansion up to 256GB via microSD. It runs on a stock version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat, with an update to Android Oreo promised. Nokia 8 is powered by a 3090mAh non-removable battery.

The unique selling point of Nokia 8, according to HMD Global is “Bothie” which allows both cameras at the front and back to capture images or videos at the same time. Nokia 8 is equipped with Zeiss branded dual 13MP rear camera setup. It consists of a 13MP color sensor (with OIS) and a 13MP monochrome sensor with 1.12um pixel size, f/2.0 aperture, 76.9˚ wide field of view, Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF), IR rangefinder and a dual tone flash. Selfie duties are handled by a 13MP sensor (PDAF, 1.12um, f/2.0,  78.4˚). Nokia 8 also features Nokia OZO spatial audio which uses 3 mics to capture 360° audio.

On the connectivity front, Nokia 8 comes with all necessary options including 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (MIMO) Wi-Fi, BlueTooth 5.0, GPS/AGPS+GLONASS+BDS, NFC (sharing) ANT+. Availability and Launch offers

Nokia 8 will be available for purchase at a price of Rs.36,999, from retail stores and Amazon.in starting from October 14. It comes at Polished Blue, Tempered Blue, Steel and Polished Copper color variants. Launch offers include 100GB of additional Jio data – 10GB extra data a month for up to 10 recharges (Rs. 309 and above) until August 2018 and access to special Nokia Mobile Care Concierge Service in 50 cities across the country.

At a price of Rs.36,999, Nokia 8 comes in direct competition with OnePlus 5 which costs Rs.32,999 for the 6GB + 64GB variant and Rs. 37,999 for 8GB + 128GB variant. Whether it offers better value for money compared to OnePlus 5 is yet to be seen, but the pricing seems acceptable as of now considering how overpriced their midrange series were. HMD Global has also confirmed the arrival of a Nokia 8 variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB Storage for European and US markets which might launch on October 20. The images and details of Nokia’s true flagship for 2017 – Nokia 9, has already started surfacing online. (Read about Nokia 9 leaks here).
