OnePlus 6T has been making various appearances on the internet and we get to see new rumours about the device almost every day. However, this isn’t a drill and the information has been confirmed by OnePlus’ co-founder, Carl Pei. In an interview with the source of this report, he asserted that the next OnePlus handset will not have a headphone jack.
OnePlus 6T headphone jack removed
Though Pie never mentions OnePlus 6T explicitly, we know that it is the “next OnePlus handset”. Taking out the 3.5mm headphone jack has been quite a controversial topic, for some customers love it while others do not. Pei’s opinion resonated with this fact but he gave some excellent reasons for ditching the headphone jack.
He said, “You’ve got to make decisions that optimize the user experience, and understand that at times, things that provide user value can also add friction. We also had to think about the negative side for our users. We found 59% of our community already owned wireless headphones earlier this year – and that was before we launched our Bullet Wireless headphones. If we were to do that two years ago, the percentage would have been much lower and it would have caused a lot of friction for our users.”
He seemed positive about the increasing percentage of users having wireless headphones. This is due to the fact that OnePlus’ Bullet Wireless headphones sold heavily and consumers accepted them with open arms. He feels that people are now habitual of this technology and hence, OnePlus 6T could ditch the jack. He also mentioned that OnePlus is not following the other companies but taking this decision because it is the right time to do so.
OnePlus 6T headphone jack removed: benefits and increased battery life
By removing the headphone jack from the OnePlus 6T, the company will be giving some additional space to its users. Rumours have been ripe that the phone will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. It now makes sense because the removal of the headphone jack can make it possible.
Pei definitely couldn’t share the presence or absence of an in-display fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 6T with all that additional space. So, he resorted to saying, “By removing the jack we’ve freed up more space, allowing us to put more new technology into the product. One of the big things is something our users have asked us for, improved battery life.”
A few reports have hinted at a bigger battery inside the phone. The co-founder mentioned that these changes will be big enough for the users to experience. However, he is aware of the restlessness of jack lovers and for that, the company has a special strategy. He went on to explain by saying, “We’re adding an adapter to the box, allowing you to use your 3.5mm headphones normally. We’re also making a new version of our Bullets V2 wired headphones, which will have a USB-C connector.“
So, can we expect the OnePlus 6 to come with any kind of headphones packed inside the box? Only time can tell that. It is crucial to note that OnePlus has always relied on the presence of a headphone jack. It has also been their key marketing tactic since the release of the OnePlus 3. At the time of OnePlus 6’s release, Pei posted some stats on Twitter. The graph showed the result of the annual headphone jack poll but he did ask the users if this affinity for the jack should decrease.
Being a community-driven organisation, OnePlus has always been aware of its fan-base. The reaction of the fans during the release of the OnePlus 6T will be the deciding factor in this case.
