Oneplus might launch a sandstone variant of 5T in January

The original OnePlus One had a unique sandstone back which not only contributed to the aesthetics but also made the phone extremely grippy unlike most phones of today with glass or metal backs. The Sandstone finish continued with OnePlus 2, and at a point where we thought it would become a signature of OnePlus flagships, the company switched to metal unibody design and stuck to it ever since the OnePlus 3.

Now it looks like OnePlus is bringing back the sandstone finish to OnePlus 5T – most likely as a special edition. Recently, OnePlus posted a video titled “What’s in the Box?” on their official YouTube channel, in which random people were allowed to touch the product kept in a closed box and describe their feelings about the surface finish.

As you might have seen in the video, opinions vary from “grippy”, “textured”, “brushed metal” to even the “sandstone back of OnePlus One”. From the looks of it, it appears that OnePlus is planning to relive the early moments by introducing the OnePlus 5T with Sandstone finish.

The 5T has finally started receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo beta update and here’s how to download it.

The recently launched Star Wars edition also had a textured back mimicking the surface of an island in the latest Star Wars movie, but it was not quite as rough as the original sandstone finish and also was white in color.

Since we don’t have any official confirmation yet from the company’s part (regarding the sandstone 5T), take this information with a grain of salt.

Either way, the video ends with “Unbox the mystery – January 2018“, which means we’ll get to know “what’s in the box”, before the end of this month.
