Vivo and OPPO are sister companies from China and both of them are doing quite well in India. It is not unusual for us to pass through a street and see at least one banner of either of these two. In the last ten days, we have seen one new device from each of these companies. While OPPO has launched the OPPO F7, Vivo has released the Vivo V9 in India.
But if you were to buy a phone under Rs 25,000, which one of these two will you choose? The choice can be quite tiring, for both the companies have tried to put their best foot forward. Well, you shouldn’t fret, for we are here to help you make a conscious choice. Let’s compare these two phones in detail.
OPPO F7 vs Vivo V9: build and design
The OPPO F7 looks beautiful undoubtedly. The rear panel on the phone is made of glass and acts as a canvas for your fingerprints. All we mean to say is that the phone lacks anti-fingerprint coating. The F7 comes in three colours and the Black Diamond is most likely to grab your attention. This special edition looks like a massive piece of diamond from a distance. This is exceptionally creative of Oppo, we’d say.
On the other hand, the phone carries a notch on the top which helps in reducing the screen-to-body ratio. The bezels on the phone are somewhat present and are even thicker on the chin. The fingerprint sensor can be reached comfortably as it is in the centre of the rear panel. The volume rockers reside comfortably on the left while the power button is present on the right of the metallic (essentially glass) frame. The phone comes with a Micro-USB port instead of Type-C. All in all, the Oppo F7 is quite decent to look at but at the same time, you will have to compromise a little if absent-bezels and clean rear panel are your things.
Vivo V9 has thinner bezels and looks strikingly similar to the iPhone X. The notch, the camera setup, you name it and Vivo has included it in the package. The aspect ratio of the phone is 19:9 and the screen-to-body ratio is brought down considerably by the notch. The device carries a 2.5D curved display which protrudes out from the frame and isn’t so seamless. The rear panel is made of glossy plastic and the curved design makes the phone ergonomic. You will face some issues in getting used to the phone, for it has a big display size. But at least, it is comfortable hold.
What’s truly bizarre about the Vivo V9’s design is its chin. The phone couldn’t avoid a thicker chin, for it uses an LCD panel, rather than the foldable OLED panel of the iPhone X. The symmetry of the design is disturbed by this fact but hey, we never said that the phone doesn’t look drool-worthy. The volume rockers and power button are present the right. You won’t find the USB Type-C here either. The rear dual camera setup is placed vertically and beneath it, resides the fingerprint sensor. The phone can easily pass for the iPhone X on the first look.
OPPO F7 vs Vivo V9: display
The OPPO F7 carries a 6.23-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 2280p. The display looks pretty reflective in bright light and comes with a pixel density of 405ppi. The screen-to-body ratio of the phone is 82.74 percent, thanks to the notch on the top. The display is laced with features like Multi-touch, 2.5D curved glass screen, and LTPS (Low-Temperature PolySilicon).
The display of the phone is quite vibrant and adds to the good looks of this phone. Along with this, the bezels around the display are minimum, and yet very much visible. As we mentioned earlier, the bottom part of the phone looks disproportionate due to that massive chin.
This offering by Vivo carries a 6.27-inch display, which is somewhat bigger than the OPPO F7. The display carries an FHD+ resolution of 1080 x 2280p and a pixel density of 400ppi. The display is made of 2.5D curved glass and gives out accurate colours without being too bright. Some users may even say that Vivo V9’s display is one of its biggest assets.
Vivo V9 is the first phone by the company to feature an FHD+ display in India. It is crisp, accurate and the best display by Vivo till date. However, it doesn’t get too bright and some people may have a huge problem with it while going out under the sun. The notch on the top of the display gives more space to the latter and reduces the screen to body ratio perfectly.
OPPO F7 vs Vivo V9: specs and hardware
The OPPO F7 runs on MediaTek’s Helio P60 processor. Now, the company hasn’t celebrated this feature much but the processor is actually a good one. It is built on a 12nm processor and has a neural unit, which is a good addition. The phone comes in two variants – 4GB of RAM + 64GB of ROM and 6GB of RAM + 128GB of ROM.
Along with a fingerprint sensor, the OPPO F7 boasts of its Facial Recognition feature. However, it isn’t as accurate as the iPhone X or as fast as the OnePlus 5T. We can’t really blame OPPO, for this phone is a budget offering. Along with this, the F7 has a 3400mAh battery with a support for Fast Charging. The device runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based ColorOS 5.0. The skin may come as a slight issue to some users but it has an option to replace the navigation buttons with screen gestures. These gestures are super smooth and can make you fall in love with the phone.
The phone has done away with a hybrid slot. This means that it has two separate columns for SIM cards and one slot for the microSD. High time that this happened, right? The phone is decently specced, even though the processor isn’t as popular among the masses right now.
The Vivo V9 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 octa-core processor. Now, while the processor inspires confidence, the V9 actually lags behind while gaming and scrolling through raw apps like Facebook. If you love gaming and using heavy apps like Asphalt 8, the phone will sadly underperform. I mean, hey, I use a Moto G5s Plus, and Asphalt 8 runs JUST fine on it.
This observation proves that we cannot place the Vivo V9 on a higher pedestal, even though it has a Snapdragon processor. Similarly, we cannot undermine the OPPO F7’s Helio P60, for the processor is optimized for AI. The Vivo V9 comes in a single variant – 4GB of RAM + 64GB of ROM. The hybrid slot is again absent and that’s a breath of fresh air again. Apart from this, the phone sports a slightly smaller 3260mAh battery with a support for Fast Charging.
The phone runs Funtouch 4.0 OS based on Android 8.1 Oreo. Now, the design isn’t the only thing that this phone has taken from the iPhone X. Funtouch 4.0 OS look a LOT like the iOS. There are a lot of third-party apps on the phone and you would do well to keep this in mind. Apart from this, the phone performs well as far as audio is concerned and doesn’t disappoint with these decent specs.
OPPO F7 vs Vivo V9: camera
Here comes the AI-based selfie expert, says OPPO. The company has basically put it all into making the camera department of this phone attractive. The company’s experts developed a special AI algorithm for taking beautiful selfies and the same algorithm was used on the OPPO F5. The selfie camera of the phone is a 25MP Sony 576 sensor. Additionally, OPPO has also introduced fun AR stickers on the phone, just like the Vivo V9. If Evan Speigel can make a whole app on it, why can’t OPPO use the ARCore for marketing its phones, right?
The selfie snapper is coupled with AI Beauty Technology 2.0, HDR and group beautification features. The main shooter on the phone is 16MP with f/1.8 aperture. It can record videos with dimensions of 1080 x 1920p@ 30 fps. Coming back to the selfie camera, it can identify 296 points on your face to understand your age, gender, skin tone etc. The AI-enabled camera then works its magic to provide you with exemplary pictures. Both the cameras can take shots in Portrait Mode. A true expert, isn’t it?
The Vivo V9 is no less when it comes to camera abilities. The phone seems to have an upper hand with a dual rear camera setup with a combination of 16MP + 5MP sensors. The selfie snapper has a 24MP lens and frankly, it is as AI-enabled as the OPPO F7. The selfie shooter uses the AI-enhancement to detect the perfect skin tone for you. Evidentally, the phone will give out selfies a shade lighter than your original skin tone. Accurate colours and decent brightness of the display are capable of giving you good results. The Vivo V9 also has AR stickers and you’ll love them, for they are quirky and colourful.
Apart from this, a Group Selfie mode emulates the Panorama mode to stitch a series of pictures together and create a wide-angle selfie. Interesting, isn’t it? The phone can compete with iPhone X and the like when it comes to edge detection in Portrait Mode. However, the main shooter is overshadowed by the front camera, for it under-exposes shadows. It is ironical but that’s what happens. On another note, the phone does full justice to being a selfie maestro. The rear camera can shoot videos with dimensions 2160 x 3840p @ 30 fps.
OPPO F7 vs Vivo V9: which is the best smartphone for you?
The OPPO F7 must be your ideal choice if you’re into good looking, reflective and selfie expert devices. The phone looks solid and would never disappoint you with its performance. Also, its large battery can help you in going more hours on a single charge. The phone will sell for Rs 21,990.
The Vivo V9 is a match made in heaven for you if you want an affordable iPhone X. The phone looks and even performs like the latter with gesture navigation, notch and an identical OS. Go for this phone if you want to sway people off with that gorgeous display and capable selfie shooter. The phone will sell for Rs 22,990.
