OPPO X 2021 with rollable display technology introduced at OPPO INNO Day

OPPO X 2021

OPPO X 2021 is the new innovative smartphone, which can expand its display from 6.7-inches to 7.4-inches. The Chinese smartphone maker has come up with yet another futuristic smartphone — the OPPO X 2021 after Find X, which was announced in 2018. While it featured a rollable camera, the 2021 OPPO X comes with a rollable display. The company has announced this new concept phone in China as part of its three concept devices unveiled at its OPPO INNO Day 2020.

OPPO X 2021 — Design

The OPPO X 2021 comes with a variable OLED display. The significant part of this new technology is that it doesn’t rely on hard folding tech, as we have seen on Galaxy Fold or Fold 2. Hence, there’s no crease settled, which is a laudable achievement on the new OPPO X 2021 smartphone.

As suggested, the latest OPPO X 2021 has a 6.7-inches OLED display, similar to any big sized phone out there. It can be expandable for up to 7.4-inches; however, the company suggests these aren’t the precise measure figures. In terms of width, the display measures from 17mm to 107mm. This rollable flexible display promises to be seamless when transitioning.

OPPO X 2021 — Expandable Display

To achieve this expandable display, OPPO is utilising Roll Motor Powertrain, underneath, suggesting — it uses electric motors with constant output force to achieve smoother/seamless transition. There’s a pulley underneath the display which uses a 6.8mm scroll diameter reel. This reel pulls the screen, or you can say it expands the screen to up to 7.4-inches. OPPO further clarifies rolling the display at diameter mentioned above (6.8mm) makes the screen crease unnoticeable, which is a good thing for a display in motion.

If you’re wondering how the moving display rests when in expansion, there’s a 2-in-1 plate developed by OPPO. The plate features two segments, which slide out and slide in simultaneously. It supports the display underneath when moving and claims to deliver no segment gaps or whatsoever.

Since it’s a moving display/screen, the strength of it should be significant. To tackle that, OPPO brings Warp Track, which is a lamination to the OLED display. It laminates the screen with 0.1mm thickness.

Bigger screens bring aspect ratios, but moving displays bring multiple aspect ratios. Yes, OPPO X 2021 comes with various aspect ratios. It includes a definite aspect ratio for video watching (16:9), gameplay, features specific ebook aspect ratio (4:3) and a split interface aspect ratio. The last one, as the name suggests, converts the display into a split-screen mode wherein users can perform multitasking as well.

OPPO X 2021 — Cameras

The company hadn’t put out specifications of the OPPO X21 smartphone since it’s a concept, as of now. However, on the back, the non-movable part on the corner features a camera array featuring quadruple cameras and a flash. The other piece on the back holds the screen up front, which makes it the movable back panel as well. However, both sides feature flat surfaces, which appear convenient as well.

OPPO AR Glass 2021

The other concept device unveiled at OPPO INNO DAY 2020 is the AR Glass 2021. Its a pair of glasses with AR built-in. These glasses feature a split design form factor, which claims to be ultralight. The weight happens to see a reduce for up to 75% with the predecessor, in comparison. The glasses can be personalised to achieve an ergonomic design as per a person’s requirement. The Birdbath tech underneath the AR glasses claims to deliver a 53% increase in contrast.

Moreover, the AR Glass 2021 on the inside brings a 90-inch TV watching experience within three metres. There’s also 94 sq. mm Amplitude speaker for better audio experience in conjunction with the video. Further, it comes with a bunch of sensors and fisheye cameras, which work together and make hand gestures more interactive in the AR experience. The AR Glass 2021 also features real-time space localisation system (has multiple, binocular fish-eyed cameras) to capture surroundings.

Lastly, the AR Glass 2021, also brings several features for gaming, education and entertainment sectors.

OPPO CyberReal

OPPO has introduced a new AI application — OPPO CyberReal. It is a real-time spatial calculation application developed by OPPO. This application allows to capture real-world cities or landscapes or street signs and convert them into virtual worlds. This works together with AR to bring the virtual world close to the real-world scenario in every detail possible.

The application uses a smartphone’s camera to capture the real world, like a mall, for instance. After filming the mall entirely, the AI application can then convert it to a replica in the virtual world of AR. It further utilises high precision positioning to make the transition from real to virtual more swiftly. It further gathers and uses Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS positioning to maker the virtual experience more realistic and accurate.

Currently, this CyberReal application is designed for smartphones. OPPO later plans to spread this across various other devices as well.
