Phones expected at MWC 2018: Galaxy S9, Sony Xperia Z2, Nokia 7, Zenfone 5, and more

Mobile World Congress is the most exciting event in the mobile industry that takes place once a year in Barcelona, Spain. Here, we get to see the best in mobile phone tech that we can expect in the coming months. We’re just a couple of days far from MWC 2018 and we’re scribbling our thoughts here on what we can expect to see from the top industry players at the expo.

Samsung Galaxy S9/S9 Plus

Galaxy S9

Samsung’s flagships will be unveiled on February 25th at the Unpacked event, a day before MWC. Of course, Samsung will command a lot of attention at the show despite the flood of leaks that have been reported. Even now, there is very little we don’t know about the Galaxy S8 successor like the exact pricing. This year, Samsung has opted to improve the camera, software, and audio experience on the Galaxy S9. We’re expecting stereo speakers, 3D Emojis, a new Samsung Experience UI, and an improved camera.

We’ll also probably see the DeX Pad too that will serve as an accessory to the Galaxy S9. Also, Samsung might launch a Galaxy Tab S4 like we saw the Galaxy Tab S3 at the MWC last year. If you’re looking for a recap of the Galaxy S9 leaks, here is a good post.

Xiaomi

Mi Mix 2s

Xiaomi will be one of the new Asian players at the MWC. However, it isn’t known officially that the company will be launching any new phones. Previous reports negated the launch of the Mi 7 at the event. A month back, reports of a Mi Mix 2s have started to show up and it is tipped to be displayed at the international expo. However, there are reports to the contrary that say there will be no major smartphone release from Xiaomi. We’ll just have to wait and see.

What’s driving the buzz around the Mi Mix 2s is its rumoured all-screen design. Xiaomi’s alleged new device comes with a unique design that harbours a small notch on the top-left side of the display. This is where it’ll put the front camera and in turn get rid of the bottom chin completely. Of course, we’re very eager to see it but there’s not a single hint from the company that can give us some optimism about its MWC plan.

Huawei

Huawei P20 Plus renders

Huawei’s MWC booths are already booked but it is unlikely that the Huawei P20 series will debut there since there’s an event in Paris on 27th March.

We’re expecting a minor presence from Huawei with smartwatch launches at the show. It is also now looking likely that Huawei might launch the premium MediaPad M5 tablet. Huawei has some teasers for an event held on February 25th. Still, nothing is confirmed by the Chinese smartphone maker. Maybe we might just see new smartphones from them.

The Huawei P20 series is another open book ready for anyone to read. It has been leaked extensively in 3D CAD-based video clips recently. Other rumours speak of a new Matebook version that might debut at the event.

LG V30s

LG V30 (2018) with AI-enhanced camera abilities to launch at MWC

LG has completely reshuffled its flagship release strategy in 2018. The South Korean brand will no longer follow annual release cycles for its G series anymore. Owing to the new development, we might be disappointed with LG at MWC this year. However, the company will reportedly launch an LG V30 (2018) with AI features at the event. Reports have tipped the new device to come with a new software called LG Lens. Much of its functionality is likened to Bixby as per current info. In essence, it would be an LG V30 with just some software tweaks.
The last week also saw reports of an LG flagship codenamed ‘Judy’. It is believed to be the LG G7 which will launch in June rather than at MWC.

Sony

Leaked renders of Sony XZ Premium Flagship and one other phone

Sony has recently teased a new smartphone for Mobile World Congress. Finally, we think Sony might have had a change of heart with respect to its smartphone design habit. A flagship Xperia XZ Pro has also been rumoured to hit the show. The new flagship is rumoured to boast of a new design as well as an 18:9 aspect ratio display. Sony is said to equip the flagship with a first-ever 4K OLED display. Moreover, Sony is also rumoured to debut two more phones alongside the flagship. Those are the Xperia XZ2, and Xperia XZ2 Compact.

Lenovo/ Motorola

Moto G6 leaked render

It’s very likely that we’ll see the Moto G6 series launch during the week-long expo. The previous Moto G5 series launched at the same time and looking at the intensity of leaks, it wouldn’t be a surprise. Much about the Moto G6 series is already known. Moto has lined up three models – Moto G6, G6 Plus, and G6 Play. The Moto G6 Plus is the highest-end variant of the trio while the G6 Play can be considered a base variant. Apart from the G6 series, there’s a chance we might see the Moto X5 or even the Moto Z3 as a surprise package.

Asus

Asus ZenFone 5 live image

It’s a certainty that we’ll see the ZenFone 5 series launch in its entirety at the expo. Asus will take to stage on February 27th to reveal its flagship series. We’re likely to see half a dozen variants of the flagship. The ZenFone 5, in particular, is no longer a secret. It is expected to sport an unapologetic iPhone X-like design. A particular ZenFone 5 Lite has also leaked in detail in the run-up to the launch event. This is another affordable variant of the ZenFone 5 family. We’ll likely see it as well during the presentations.

Nokia

nokia 7 plus

Current CEO of HMD Global previously said that Nokia had “awesome” things in store for MWC. While that does have us excited we’re not sure how many products Nokia will pack in its luggage for the show. Our guess is the Nokia 1, Nokia 9/8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus and the Nokia 4.

The Nokia 1 is a first of its kind Android Oreo (Go Edition) phone. Basically, it is a kind of condensed version of Android that is resource-friendly. Hence it will run on very less demanding hardware. The Nokia 1 is part of Google’s quest to get another billion users on Android. We’re yet to see how this project goes. The Nokia 7 Plus is the first Nokia handset to sport the elongated 18:9 aspect ratio display. Also, its expected to be an shipped under the Android One program as a Snapdragon 660-toting mid-ranger.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco is basically the Nokia 8 with an OLED display while the Nokia 4 is an affordable low-end device.
