All the major chip makers have already announced their updated SoCs. Huawei has announced the Kirin 980 which is already there in the Mate 20 Pro. As for Samsung, there is the Exynos 9820, and for Apple, there’s the A12 Bionic chipset. With the ball in Qualcomm’s court, the company was rumored to launch the Snapdragon 8150 SoC. However, as it turns out, the Snapdragon 8150 was just the internal naming. The actual name is Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, and its here.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
Courtesy of TechCrunch that published their official story way before the actual launch, we now know about the upcoming processor. Dubbed the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, it will succeed the Snapdragon 845 SoC. The Snapdragon 855 will be the first commercially used 5G-capable chip combination for high-end smartphones.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 5G and NPU
According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 855 will be “the first commercial platform for mobile devices with support for multi-gigabit 5G connections”. What’s more is that it will also, for the first time, feature a dedicated NPU integrated into the SoC. Basically, it is said to provide better processing of information in the field of artificial intelligence. It should provide up to three times more performance than previous Qualcomm chips.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Optimized for gaming
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 has also optimized the processor for gaming. It will be called “Snapdragon Elite Gaming”, to provide better FPS and slightly lower temperatures. The chipset’s graphics engine has also been optimized for augmented reality applications. Additionally, there is a specialized computational vision engine that processes “computational photography” data to help deliver better images and videos.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 specifications
According to the report, the Snapdragon 855 will come with a triple-cluster architecture. It will be using 4x 1.78GHz power-saving cores along with 3x 2.42GHz high-end cores. One of these high-end cores will actually be able to achieve speeds up to 2.84 GHz. As for the GPU, the Snapdragon 855 will feature the Adreno 640 to bring a substantial performance boost. Lastly, as expected, it is built on a 7nm architecture. 5G support is provided by the Snapdragon X50 5G modem in addition to the integrated Snapdragon X24 LTE modem.
