Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon 855 processor, the updated chipset to the Snapdragon 845 platform. The new flagship chipset brings along a ton of new features and performance improvements. Snapdragon 855 vs Snapdragon 845: which one’s more powerful?
Undoubtedly, the Snapdragon 855 is way more powerful than the Snapdragon 845 SoC. The new processor packs in a tri-cluster architecture. It makes use of 3 performance cores clocked at 2.42GHz. As for power efficiency, there are 4 efficiency cores clocked at 1.80GHz. Lastly, there is a single Prime Core which is clocked at a whopping 2.84GHz. Based on the new 7nm architecture, it improves upon the 10nm architecture of the Snapdragon 845.

As for the basic connectivity module, the Snapdragon 855 makes use of LTE Cat.20. It improves upon the LTE Cat.18 sported on the Snapdragon 845. However, that’s not all. The Snapdragon 855 will be the world’s first chipset to feature support for 5G spectrum. Additionally, it also makes use of a new WiFi chipset. It will offer speeds up to 10Gbps with support for 60GHz WiFi frequency.

The Snapdragon 845 was already sported on a ton of flagship offerings from OEM. However, all the AI features on those devices was mostly software based. With the Snapdragon 855, this will all change. The Snapdragon 855 features an onboard NPU. Thanks to the Qualcomm Hexagon 690 DSP, the Snapdragon 855 will offer better AI features.

The Snapdragon 845 is already there on all the flagship devices of 2018. As for Snapdragon 855, the processor is expected to make its debut in 2019. OnePlus has already confirmed that it will be the first OEM to manufacture a smartphone with the Snapdragon 855 onboard. We can expect that, alongside other devices to debut at next year’s MWC 2019.

Qualcomm’s latest announcement of the Snapdragon 855 makes it the latest flagship processor from the company. It puts it up head to head with the likes of Samsung’s Exynos 9820, Huawei’s Kirin 980, and Apple’s A12 Bionic chipset. While the Mate 20 Pro and the iPhone XS are already here sporting the latter two, the other chipsets still have to make their debut.
