Samsung Galaxy S9 could feature an NPU chip for AI-based tasks like the iPhone X

NPU chip to come on Galaxy S9

Samsung is reportedly working on the development of Neural Processing Units (NPU), popularly known as NPU chip or AI chips. These chips are the reason behind every task performed by the servers of Samsung.

According to sources, Samsung has almost completed its work on the AI chips for servers and these AI chips are on par with the AI chips of Apple and Huawei. The company is working diligently on the development of its NPU chip in the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. The NPUs are estimated to be released by the second half of the year 2018.

After Apple and Huawei introduced the AI enabled A11 Bionic and Kirin 970 chipset, Samsung too started its work on the AI chip. Although the company started late, it has shown momentum and has caught up with its rivals pretty fast. Samsung’s NPU is rumoured to deliver higher operations than Apple and Huawei.

The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X were launched with an NPU which handled the AI based tasks. Similarly, Huawei launched the NPU for its smartphones like Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and Honor View 10

The prime function of an NPU chip is that when it is added to a smartphone along with the main chipset and GPU, the device can analyze, store, and process data without using a cloud server. Recent rumours suggest that Samsung will showcase the NPU chipset on their upcoming smartphones, Galaxy S9/S9+

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to be launched at the Mobile World Congress 2018 to be held in Barcelona, Spain.
