Samsung has introduced its latest high-end processor, which is said to power the upcoming Galaxy S11 series. The Exynos 990 is the company’s 7nm process based chipset, which is an upgrade to the Exynos 9825 7nm processor.
Samsung Exynos 990 features
With the new Samsung Exynos 990, we’re seeing the deployment of the new Exynos M5 microarchitecture. The company claims that the new design is 20% faster than the Exynos M4 in 9820. The chipset is once again based on the 7nm architecture, but the difference here is that the middle core is a Cortex A76 instead of the Cortex A75 on the Exynos 9825. The big difference here seems to be in the GPU department, however. The Exynos 990 comes with a new Mali-G77 in an MP11 configuration for which the company claims performance uplifts of up to 20%, or power efficiency gains of up to 20%.
The processor also paves way for faster RAM, supporting the new-generation LPDDR5 memory. The company is also betting big on the camera processing power of the device. The Exynos 990 chipset comes with support for a 108MP single lens. You may recall that Samsung has worked with Xiaomi for a 108MP sensor. As such, it is possible that the Galaxy S11 series might sport the same lens as well. In terms of displays, in addition to 10-bit video and HDR display support, the processor also features a 120Hz refresh-rate display driver. In fact, it can support 4K UHD displays with a max resolution of 4096×2160.
Samsung Exynos Modem 5123
Alongside the new flagship SoC, Samsung also unveiled its new modem which has been advertised as a new discrete chipset. It’s a complete multi-band solution that supports everything from 2G to 5G sub-6 as well as mmWave. That said, Samsung has worked on enhancing the chip’s maximum throughput. In regular 4G LTE, the new chip now supports downlink speeds of up to 3Gbps while offering 422Mbps upload. In 5G sub-6, we’re seeing 5.1Gbps downloads and 7.35Gbps in mmWave networks.
Samsung Exynos 990 availability
As of now, there is no word as to when we shall see a device sport the new Exynos chipset. That said, it is very probable that the Galaxy S11 series will be the first to come with the Exynos 990 SoC and the Exynos Modem 5123.
