Samsung’s new foldable smartphone with an infinity flex display is here

Samsung foldable smartphone featured - Samsung Galaxy Winner

Samsung has been teasing the mobile world community with foldable displays and body designs for a while now. In fact, the company was touted to be the first one to launch a device of its kind. However, with the launch of the recent Flex Pai, Samsung was forced to come out of its shell and give us a better look at their foldable technology.

Samsung Infinity Flex Display

Samsung is calling its foldable phone technology the Infinity Flex Display. The device features a tablet-sized screen that can be folded up to fit inside a pocket.

The smartphone is kind of a hybrid device which features a main screen on the front when folded and then expands into a 7.3-inch tablet display. As reported by CNET, the resolution when folded is 840 x 1960, but 1536 x 2152 when unfolded.  According to Samsung, the smartphone can run up to three apps simultaneously, using Samsung’s multi-active window feature.

While the device is far from finished, Samsung says it will be able to start mass production of the Infinity Flex Display in a “matter of months.” Assisting Samsung in this feat would be Google themselves as well. In fact, Google is providing guidance for developers. This will help them to start using existing features that are built into Android to support these foldable displays.

Samsung not alone

While Samsung might be leading the race to foldable smartphones, it certainly isn’t alone. Chinese OEMs such as Huawei, Lenovo, and Xiaomi are already said to be working on prototypes of their own. LG has also long been touted to be just Samsung in entering the foldable smartphone business. With Google stating that support for foldable devices is coming, one can expect to see more of these handsets in 2019.
