stealWhile leaks and rumours are not new to the smartphone business, being completely exposed right before a global launch could be unnerving. Yes, I am talking about the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. When Samsung announced the phones today – February 25 – in Barcelona, we all but knew everything about the phones. Thanks to this massive leak by WinFuture.de.
That said, the newly announced Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are definitely worthy upgrades to its predecessors the Galaxy S8/S8+, which in all honesty redefined the smartphone industry with its Infinity design. This year, the focus is on the rear camera, a new speaker setup, new colours, and fixing a few follies from the past.
Before I talk about what’s new, let’s take a look a look at what’s virtually unchanged from last year. The new Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ come with 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch QHD+ (1440 x 2960p) displays, respectively. However, the front has been slightly redesigned now to include a smaller chin at the bottom. The display aspect ratio is the same as the Galaxy S8/Galaxy S8+, which is 18.5:9. The display also supports horizontal orientation now even in the home screens.
The phones are also IP68-certified, which allows them to survive being submerged in water up to 1.5-meters of depth for as long as 30 minutes. The battery capacity is also the same, the smaller Galaxy S9 comes with a 3000mAh module whereas its larger counterpart, the Galaxy S9+ comes with a 3500mAh unit. The phones also support fast wireless charging.
The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ now come in a new Lilac Purple colour, apart from the regular Midnight Black, Titanium Silver, and Coral Blue variants. Internally the phones will come in two options, the European (and Indian) variants are expected to include the Exynos 9810 oct-core SoC, which is a 10nm processor. The Exynos 9810 has four 1.9GHz power-saving cores and is coupled with four 2.9GHz high-end cores.
The smaller Galaxy S9 has 4GB of RAM and the Galaxy S9+ comes with 6GB of RAM. The phone now comes with 64GB and 256GB of fast UFS 2.1 flash storage. It also comes with the option of storage expansion up to 400GB using a microSD card. Also new is the AKG-tuned dual stereo speakers with Dolby ATMOS support.
The one thing that separates the bigger Galaxy S9+ from the Galaxy S9, are the dual cameras on the rear. There are two 12MP cameras, where one of the cameras can do optical zoom and portrait mode. It also has optical image stabilisation on both the lens. However, the 12MP primary camera on both the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ can do variable aperture. This means the camera can switch between f/2.4 and f/1.5 aperture on the fly. The camera can also do 960fps super slow-mo videos…of your cat, obviously. The camera app can also auto-capture slow mo videos, and create GIFS.
Talking about GIFs, Samsung uses augmented reality (AR) to create emojis that look like you. Basically, the iPhone X’s animojis on crack.
There’s also a brand new Dex pad with Knox integration for enterprise consumers.
Oh, and before I forget…Samsung has finally moved the fingerprint sensor to the bottom of the camera module. Better sense prevailed, eventually eh?
