Sony came to the MWC 2018 with a renovated Xperia XZ2 line. Now, less than two months later, the Japanese phone maker has unveiled the souped-up Xperia XZ2 Premium. The handset represents an upgrade in most key areas like display, camera, battery compared to the XZ2 but carries the same overall looks. Considering the XZ2’s $800 price tag and Sony’s pricing policy, we reckon this could make your pocket lighter by $900. However, that’s our take as official prices have not been announced.

The XZ2 Premium comes with a 5.8-inch 4K display that supports HDR versus a Full-HD+ display on the XZ2. Most of this year’s flagships have focused on the camera and so does Sony. Sony has for the first time put two sensors at the back, one being a 19MP RGB lens and the other being a 12MP monochrome lens. Similar to Huawei, Sony is gunning for high ISO scores.

For still photos, the company promises a score of 51,200 max. While in videos you can reach 12,800. This type of score wouldn’t get you very good images on a smartphone. But Sony says that their “AUBE image signal processor” does a very good job at reducing noise in low light. Yes, and there’s slow-mo as well – 1080p @ 960fps to be precise which overpowers the Galaxy S9’s 720p. There’s a Bokeh mode as well but this will arrive via a software update later on.

The front camera is a 13MP shooter that is powered by a 3450mAh battery. It runs Android Oreo slightly diluted with Sony’s customization. Another major difference is the 6GB of RAM bumped up from the 4GB on the Xperia XZ2 to justify that “Premium” tag.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium should hit global markets starting this Summer. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below. Stay tuned to  Mr. Phone and download our app to get the latest updates from the world of smartphone technology.
